Place Clues Ad forum festinant. They hurry to the Forum. Romam festinavit. He hurried to Rome. E ludo venit Eucleides comes from the school. Brundisio discesserat Publius had departed from Brundisium. Cornelius in atrio amicos exspectat. Cornelius waits for his friends in the atrium. Publius Baiis morabatur. Publius was staying in Baiae.
In the first sentence of each pair, the preposition and the case of the noun give clues to the meaning of the phrase. In the second sentence in each pair, there is no preposition. This is normal with names of cities, towns and small islands.
A. With names of cities, towns and small islands, the accusative case without a preposition indicates place to which. Romam festinavit. He hurried to Rome. Delum navigavit. He sailed to Delos.
B. With names of cities, towns, and small islands, the ablative case without a preposition indicates place from which. Brundisio discesserat Publius had gone from Brundisium. Baiis profectus est. He set out from Baiae.
C. 1 st s -ae With names of cities, towns, and small islands, the locative case without a preposition indicates place in which. The endings of the locative case are as follows: pl -is 2 nd s -i pl -is 3 rd s -i -e pl -ibus

B. Words or Phrases in the accusative or ablative cases without prepositions are found expressing other ideas of time: 1. accusative duration of time - how long something went on multos annos totum diem 2. for many years (throughout many years) for the whole day ablative of time when and ablative of time within which: aestate in summer eo tempore at that time
C. 1. Adverbs are found in some time expressions: cras, tomorrow heri, yesterday hodie, today iam, now iterum, again nunc, now abhinc, back from this point in time, ago abhinc tres dies 2. + accusative three days ago post, after(ward) + ablative ante, previously, before + ablative tribus post diebus afterward by three days = three days later tribus ante diebus previously by three days =three days before
