Active and Passive Voice When we talk about active and passive voice, we are talking about the relationship of the subject and the main verb.
Active Voice – in the active voice the subject performs the action of the verb. The man builds the house. Passive Voice – in the passive voice the subject receives the action of the verb. The house is built by the man.
Activity 1: Tell whether the italicized verbs are active or passive. 1. The fields were plowed by the weary horses. 2. The girls eat too much candy. 3. The good men had been tried and convicted by the unfair jury. 4. In summer teachers often read popular books.
5. The children are painting the fence. 6. The soldiers were carrying heavy packs. 7. Many parents will be fooled by their children.
8. The ball game was rained out by a huge thunderstorm. 9. The lawn had been mowed too many times by the gardener. 10. Mrs. Jones closed the library for renovations.
N. B. When an English verb has a helping form of the verb be (is, are, was, were) and ends in –ing, it is active. When it ends in –ed it is passive. active: he is carrying passive: he is carried
