Chapter 3: The English Establish 13 Colonies Section 1: Early Colonies Have Mixed Success
English Want Colonies in America • After the defeat of the Spanish Armada, England felt confident she could whip Spain in future wars. The English were now brave enough to colonize in America
Mercantilism • To become rich and powerful, the English needed raw materials. • She sent expeditions to America to set up colonies • These colonies would provide raw materials for English manufactured goods and provide a market for finished products • This economic system is called MERCANTILISM
Two Early Colonies Fail • Sir Walter Raleigh was sent to America by Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1585. • The first colony of Roanoke failed when the Indians refused to give the settlers food. Those that didn’t starve to death went back home.
Raleigh Tries Again • Sir Walter Raleigh tried once more to colonize Roanoke, Virginia a year later. • He left the colony in America to return to England for supplies. When he got back, everyone was gone.
Joint – Stock Companies • Sir Walter Raleigh had used his own money to finance the failed colonies at Roanoke. He went broke. • Learning from his mistakes, investors joined together to form joint – stock companies. They pitched money in so no one person would lose everything if the colony failed.
Jamestown, Virginia • In 1607, the Virginia Company of London sailed up the James River in Virginia and formed the first permanent English colony in North America. • The colony was named Jamestown after King James.
Virginia House of Burgesses • The Virginia House of Burgesses was created in 1619. • It was the FIRST REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY IN THE AMERICAN COLONIES.
