Colonial America v Impacts of Mercantilism (15 -1600 s) § Extracting wealth from foreign lands crucial § Goal was to maximize exports, minimize imports § A nation’s colonies could become both a source of goods and a market for that nation’s finished products § Navigation Acts (1651) laws designed to restrict England’s carrying trade to English ships in the 17 th and 18 th centuries. Originally framed to encourage the development of English shipping so that adequate auxiliary vessels would be available in wartime, became a form of trade protectionism during an era of mercantilism 6
