Chapter 3 People, Leadership and Management Working with people

ALLOW PEOPLE TO MANAGE Employ the right people and use the right tools for the job. Any company is full of ‘experts’. LET PEOPLE MAKE DECISIONS REGARDING THEIR WORKThis is called ‘empowerment’.
THE LEADER In design the leader is called the ‘Product Champion’. This person must be an enthusiast but a realist.
The Design Circle is an effective way to manage people through the process. It can cope with a maximum of 9 people at any one time. People join and leave the circle as their expertise is required. People enter when needed Product champion People exit the design circle and may re-enter later
The Roles and Responsibility Matrix This helps to identify who is needed at the various stages of the process.
The cost of the various stages of the Design Process This shows that the later stages are much more expensive than the early stages.
Summary This lecture is about how to do things through people. • Leadership and communication need to be effective if any process is to be efficient. • Good management needs delegation and this needs trust and empowerment. • Good leadership is essential and a Product Champion can provide this. • The Roles and Responsibility Matrix shows who should be involved and when.
