RELIGIOUS VIEWS • Humanism and other Renaissance ideas that began in Italy spread throughout North and Western Europe. • Each place had it’s own take on their changes, however the changes were significant, none the less. • There were two existing views of Religion in the Western World: • • • 1) individuals should follow the rules, rituals, and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church 2) individuals should question and respond to the Bible personally. Pluralistic, Protestant Reformation, mother tongue, literate, Protestant

PROTESTANT REFORMATION • Humanists questioned the actions of popes and clergy. They also wondered why they were to follow the teachings of the Church without questioning it. • They did not want to break completely from the church, they just wanted to see some reforms (changes). • This desire for change brought about the Protestant Reformation. • The Protestant Reformation was a desire to bring about change in the Roman Catholic Church, not to separate from it.

PROTESTANT REFORMATION • The Protestant Reformation did not occur with the intent of forming a new Church. • The Reformation created a division amongst Christians however. • This division led to wars and new religious ideas that became the basis for the religion called Protestantism • The Printing Press was an important factor in the Reformation because flyers were created and distributed urging people to reform and join the new church. • Reformation

RELIGIOUS REFORM • Religious change began to occur throughout western Europe. • Religion became more individualized, which led to the formation of new churches as well as changes in the Roman Catholic Church. • The Roman Catholic Church made changes in its practices, as well as the proper behavior of its clergy.

RELIGIOUS REFORM • The hostility between Roman Catholics and Protestants was often used for political purposes. • Leaders would use citizen’s beliefs to increase their support from voters. • Because Protestant and Catholic states were at war a lot during the Renaissance, politicians would use citizen’s religious beliefs to help build political power.

• So…the Renaissance began with a strong Roman Catholic belief system, and progressed to many Christian denominations. • These differences caused splits among people and led them to follow different leaders. • The fights for religious freedoms created a sense of solidarity and common identity among people that influenced the formation of countries we see today.
