Educational Requirements n Associate’s Degree = awarded by a career/technical skill or community college for completion of a 2 year degree. ¨ Ex: n DMACC Bachelor’s Degree = awarded by a college or university after a prescribed course of study that lasts 4 years or longer. ¨ Ex: U of Iowa, Grandview University, Simpson
Educational Requirements Master’s Degree = awarded by college or university after completion of one or more years of work beyond bachelor’s degree. n Doctorate/Doctoral/Doctor’s degree = awarded after completion of 2 or more years of work beyond bachelor’s or master’s degree. Some can require four to six years of additional study n
Health Science Cluster Developed by National Consortium on Health and Science Technology Education (NCHSTE). n Cluster allows student to recognize career requirements to build a foundation and promote success at the post-secondary level. n
Certification A person has fulfilled requirements of education and performance and meets the standards and qualifications established by the professional association or government agency that regulates a particular career. n Ex: Certified Dental Assistant, Certified Laboratory Technician, Certified Medical Assistant n
Registration Required in some health careers n Performed by a regulatory body that administers examinations and maintains a current list (“registry”) n Ex: Registered Dietitian, Registered Radiologic Technologist, Registered Respiratory Therapist n
Licensure Process whereby government agency authorizes individuals to work in a given occupation n Ex: Physician, Dentist, Physical Therapist, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse n
Continuing Education Units n Required to renew licenses or maintain certification or registration
National Health Care Skill Standards Health Care Standards: specify the knowledge and skill that most health care workers need n Therapeutic/Diagnostic Core Standards: required to focus on direct patient care in therapeutic and diagnostic health careers n
National Health Care Skill Standards Therapeutic Cluster Standards: for workers that are involved in changing the health status of a patient over time n Diagnostic Cluster Standards: required of workers in health careers that are involved in creating a picture of the health status of a patient at a single point in time. n
National Health Care Skill Standards Health Informatics Services: required of workers in health careers involved with documentation of patient care. n Support (Environmental) Services: required of workers involved in creating a therapeutic environment, maintaining an aesthetically pleasing environment n
National Health Care Skill Standards Biotechnology Research and Development: required of workers in healthcareers that involve bioscience research and development. n See page 44 for list of clusters n
