1. Why was China traditionally not interested in trading with the West? - It had extensive natural resources and was selfsufficient. They didn’t need to trade with the West.
2. Opium War - 1839, a war b/w China and the British when the British refused to stop trading opium in China. The British won. 3. Boxer Rebellion - a rebellion of Chinese peasants against foreigners in China- the rebellion failed but gave rise to a wave of nationalism in China.
4. What do the Opium War and Boxer Rebellion have in common? - Resentment of foreigners contributed to both
5. The Treaty of Kanagawa allowed foreign trade and the giving of land to foreigners opened Japan to the outside - made many Japanese feel they were losing control of their country which inspired them to end their isolation and begin to westernize
6. Meiji era - 1867, the rule of Emperor Mutsuhito in Japan, characterized by an encouragement to modernize and industrialize Japan
7. Russo-Japanese War - 1904, Japan attacked Russian ships outside of Manchuria. Japan defeated the Russians and took control of Manchuria, Korea, and most of Russia’s pacific fleet
8. How did independence affect most Latin American nation’s economies? - Majority of population remained poor laborers caught in cycle of poverty - Landowners got wealthier after independence - Prevented economic development
9. Monroe Doctrine - US policy of opposition to European interference in Latin America (US tells Europe to stay out of the Western Hemisphere)
10. Spanish-American War - 1898 - America joined Cuban forces to help the gain independence from Spain
11. Who built the Panama Canal and why? The United States began built the Panama Canal from 1903 -1914 to provide a water route that saves them from traveling around the tip of South America.
12. What role did Santa Anna play in Mexico’s independence from Spain? - Santa Anna played a leading role as he helped fight for Mexican independence in 1821 and 1829, becoming president in 1833.
13. What were the major causes of tension between Mexicans and American colonists who settled in Texas? - American colonists ignored Mexican laws and worked to gain independence from Mexico
14. How did Diaz’s rule of Mexico change the government? - Porfrio Diaz took control of Mexico in 1876, used dictatorial powers to keep order in Mexico
