War in Europe n n n September 1, 1939 -Hitler sends troops into Poland. September 3, 1939 -Great Britain and France declare war on Germany. The Germans attacked Poland quickly and fiercely. Poland fell to Germany within the month. This offensive was called blitzkrieg, means lightning war, the swift attack by the Germans.

War in Europe § The Soviet Union moved troops into eastern Poland the Germans controlled Western Poland. § Stalin took over the Baltic regions of § 1. Latvia 2. Lithuania 3. Estonia and forced them accept Soviet military bases. § The Soviets invaded Finland but were defeated and left Finland.

Battle of Dunkirk n n With the Germans approaching the British and French prepared to leave France. More than 800 ships, ferries and fishing boats evacuated the troops to safety.

Battle of Britain n August 1940 - Germans bomb British shipyard, industries and cities, by air. Germany was never able to win victory over Britain due to the heroics of Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF). Hitler retreated and ended the air attacks.
