Lines and Symbols ± Roof Shape - Steeper pitch means more shadow will be cast ± Some have larger overhang for shallower pitched roofs to get same shadow • Use a solid line for changes in roof shape • Lines representing walls are hidden
Lines and Symbols ± Hip is a line that is drawn to represent the exterior intersection between two roof planes ± An interior corner is called a valley ± If same pitch is used on all sides then the line is drawn at 45 degrees
Lines and Symbols ± A Dutch hip roof is drawn with a gable end • Typically 48” to 72” from exterior wall (24” increments)
Dimensions of sides of home and its affect on roof lines
Tying gables into hips
Drawing Bay Windows • Can be done with gable end or witches hat • Square walls of the bay • Lay out ridge line • Extend lines for roof overhang
Varying Ceiling Heights What would front elevation look like?
Materials ± Nonstructural material (vents, skylights, chimneys, and downspouts) are locally noted
Downspout Locations/ Sizes/ Number Needed
Chimneys and Skylights
Dimensions ± Very few dimensions are required ± Only overhangs and general locations of objects are dimensioned
Example Required Elements: • Perimeter walls and posts • Dimensions at overhangs • Hips, Valleys, & Ridges noted • Pitch noted
