Kennedy Wins Senator John F. Kennedy from Massachusetts and Vice President Richard Nixon ran for President in 1960. Cuba Fidel Castro was the leader of Cuba. Castro came to power by promising democracy to the people. Once in power Castro seized 3 oil refineries. America cut off relations with Cuba. The Soviet Union helped Cuba, where Castro was now considered a dictator.

The Bay of Pigs The US trained Cuban exiles to invade Cuba, which they did on April 17, 1961. The event did not go well, they were met by 25, 000 Cuban troops and most were killed or imprisoned. Kennedy paid a ransom to get them released and promised to help them

Cuban Missile Crisis The Soviets helped the Cubans and promised to defend them. They brought many missiles to Cuba during the summer of 1962. American spy planes photographed them aimed at the US. They could hit a US city in minutes. For days there was a standoff with the possibility of nuclear war. Finally, to avoid a confrontation Soviet ships on their way to Cuba stopped. The US agreed to not invade Cuba if the Soviet Union removed the missiles.

The New Frontier President Kennedy tried to encourage Americans to support the exploration of space and new forms of technology. The Peace Corps – President Kennedy created the Peace Corps, which was a volunteer program to assist in Latin America, Asia and Africa. The Peace Corps was a huge success and people of all backgrounds signed up, by 1968 over 35, 000 volunteers were around the world.

Tragedy in Dallas On November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas, President Kennedy was in an open air limo traveling through crowds when a series of rifle shots hit and killed him. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the murder, his palm print was on the rifle used to kill Kennedy. Oswald was killed the next day while being transferred. The Warren Commission was set up to investigate the murder and found only Oswald was involved in the shootings. To this day many Americans wonder if there was a conspiracy to kill him by another group.

The Great Society Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) was a hardworking politician from Texas As President Johnson pushed for and achieved the passage of two bills Kennedy had proposed, a tax cut and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prevented discrimination based on race, religion, national origin and sex.

Johnson’s Great Society was a legislative program that would end poverty and racial injustice, and create a higher standard of living and equal opportunity. LBJ signed into law the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 which provided more than $1 billion in aid to schools. This was the first education aid bill in history.
