Achievement Goal Theory Ø Developed by John Nicholls. Ø Success and failure depend on an athlete’s perception of whether he or she has reached his or her personal goals. Ø Intensity and effort are driven by the type of goals one sets. Ø Achievement motivation depends on perceived ability. This is determined by self-referencing or normative referencing.

Ø Degree of involvement lies along a continuum. A specific athlete can have high, medium, or low levels of both ego and task involvement.
