The Cold War Begins “How did what happened after the Second World War separate the world and what efforts were made to bring it back together?
Differing Viewpoints The United States The Soviet Union • Private citizens control property and elect leaders • Distrusted Stalin for allying with Hitler early in the war • Encourage selfdetermination for all nations • Reunite Germany so they can be productive and rejoin the world community • The state controls all property, with the Communist Party ruling • Distrusted Allies for waiting to open a second front • Encouraged all nations to rise up in the worldwide Communist Revolution • Keep Germany separate so it would never attack again
An Agreement Sets the Stage • The Yalta Agreement: Split Europe into an Eastern and Western bloc (a group of countries sharing a common purpose) and allowed Poland to have free elections – But Stalin goes back on his promise!!! • The East and West is now divided, Churchill calls it an “Iron Curtain”
Keeping the Peace • In 1945, the United Nations is created with 50 countries joining as members • UN’s General Assembly is made up of all member nations who pass resolutions to impact world growth and safety • UN’s Security Council has veto power over any resolution and is made to keep world peace – Permanent members: U. S. , U. S. S. R. , France, Great Britain and China • The United States and the USSR would use their positions to spread their influence during the Cold War
Let’s take a look at Containment, which will become the major foreign policy of the United States during the Cold War 1. As the war drew to a close, we didn’t know if the U. S. S. R. was going to remain an ally or not 2. Take a look at the report written by Clark Clifford and use it to answer the questions with the reading 3. Think to yourself about our daily question, does this separate or does this bring the world together?
