Chapter 15 DRIVING IN RURAL AREAS *80% OF ALL ROADWAYS ARE RURAL!
Rural Roadways Constructed of different materials – Gravel, dirt, and country roads (paved) Safe Speed – common sense speed. You can get tickets for overdriving conditions. Traffic Controls – more intersections are partially controlled and uncontrolled. Hazards are different – animals and larger vehicles/farm equipment IPDE – you are traveling at higher speeds than city/town driving.
Rural Roadways Continued Curves Advisory speed zone – speed through a maneuver and once you are through the maneuver, the speed limit after the curve would be what the last white speed sign you saw said. Following Traffic – increase following distance – add 1 second for every 10 mph because it will take longer to stop at higher speeds. Multi-lane roads Divided Highways Median – the divider between two lanes of raods going the same direction. Right Lane – normal traffic flow Left Lane – the passing lane
Passing It is the drivers responsibility for the pass! https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Duw-c 8 O 8 Y 9 Y https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=TU 4 -9 k 1 BSa. E
Passing Ask these 3 questions before you decide to pass. 1. Is the pass legal? – broken yellow lines = legal – solid yellow lines = illegal. Is the pass safe? Is the pass worth it? Preparing to Pass. Check all roadway signs and markings to make sure it is legal Check oncoming traffic for at least 30 seconds. Check behind you to see if anyone is passing you. In mirror and over your left shoulder blind spot (SMOG technique)
Passing Executing a pass (remember – passer is responsible for the pass) Execute the SMOG technique when passing Signal, Mirrors, Over the shoulder, Go Make sure you see the headlights of the car you are passing before you move back into your lane. SMOG back to your lane once you can see the headlights of the car you are passing.
No Passing Situations Not on a hill – not allowed 700 -1000 feet from top of the hill. Not on a curve Not in bad weather Not at a RR crossing Not in an intersection Not in heavy traffic
Being Passed Help the passer if they need help. You might help by slowing down or moving to the right. It is not your responsibility to do this, but it will make it easier for the person passing you and it could help avoid a crash.
Slow Moving Vehicles Tractors will have a slow moving vehicle sign on the back of the vehicle which is a red and orange triangle to alert you to the slow moving vehicle. The vehicle is moving less than 30 mph so slow down and pass with caution. Many of these vehicles also present some sort of sight restriction, so that is another reason to use caution.
