What Is Tobacco? I. Tobacco – is a woody, shrub-like plant with large leaves *There are over 4, 000 chemicals in tobacco. *Congress passed a law that banned cigarette ads from television. II. Nicotine - An addictive drug found in tobacco leaves and in all tobacco products Is one of the cancer causing chemicals in tobacco smoke. Nicotine enters the body when tobacco leaves are smoked, chewed, or snorted, and change the chemistry in the brain.
What Is Tobacco? III. Addictive - Capable of causing a user to develop intense cravings Nicotine is an addictive drug, meaning users develop intense cravings for it also known as an addiction. Once the drug has been in the body regularly, the body begins to depend on it. Tobacco is therefore habit forming.
What Is Tobacco? IV. Tar - A thick, oily, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns When smokers inhale, tar deposits form on the bronchi If tar builds up, serious diseases such as emphysema (which is when the air bags are damaged) and lung cancer can develop. These diseases make it difficult for a person to breathe. Cancer is a disease in which cells grow without control. Ex. Leukoplakia which is white spots on the gums and the inside of the checks. V. Bronchi - Passages through which air enters and spreads through the lungs Alveoli are tiny air sacks in your lungs.
What Is Tobacco? VI. Carbon Monoxide - A poisonous, colorless, odorless gas which is given off when tobacco burns Carbon monoxide in smoke passes through the lungs and into the bloodstream. Carbon monoxide reduces the amount of oxygen the blood vessels can carry. Carbon monoxide weakens muscles and blood vessels, which can lead to heart attack and stroke.
