CHAPTER 11 BUNITY AND DIVERSITY How is classification
CHAPTER 11 BUNITY AND DIVERSITY How is classification used to support evolutionary theory?
Objectives ■ What is the classification model used for today? ■ How does worldview affect the way people classify organisms?
Changing Relationships ■ Evolutionists are trying to piece together phylogenetic tree – Believe birds evolved from reptiles ■ Systematics- science of classification – 2 parts: – Phylogeny- constructing evolutionary history – Cladistics- reclassifying organisms according to evolutionary history
Changing Relationships ■ Genetics and biochemistry help scientists classify organisms – Archaea vs. Bacteria: 1 genetic difference (isoprene vs peptidoglycan) – Pandas- big raccoon or cuddly bear? ■ Genetics revealed they are just cuddly bears!
Classification and a Secular Worldview ■ What is phylogenetic tree? – Tree of life – Shows the supposed evolutionary relationships between groups of organisms
Classification and a Secular Worldview ■ Each branch is called a clade – Includes all the descendants of an evolutionary ancestor
Classification and a Secular Worldview ■ Places where 2 species split and become more diverse– Divergence – Happens when a derived trait appeared and began to be passed down
Classification and a Secular Worldview ■ Sometimes a convergence happens – 2 dissimilar species evolve the same derived trait
Classification and a Biblical Worldview ■ Use Baraminology – Looking at life on the basis of created kinds – Diversity is due to God including a lot of information in cells
Classification and a Biblical Worldview ■ Each of the first/ original animals produced the others: – Thru divergence, original cat diverged into a variety of cat species – Happens very quickly (thousands of years instead of millions)
Classification and a Biblical Worldview ■ Convergence happens why? – God chose to give certain traits to a wide array of organisms – Birds, butterflies, and bats all being able to fly because He knew it would be beneficial
