CHAPTER 10 NUTRITION LESSON 1
BIG IDEA • Learning to make healthful food choices will keep you healthy throughout your life
Key objectives from Food Pyramid • Eat a variety of foods • Balance the food you eat WITH physical activity (to maintain or improve your body composition) • Choose a diet (what you eat) with plenty of grain products, vegetables and fruits • Choose a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol • Choose a diet moderate in sugars (low in sugars) • Choose a diet moderate in salt and sodium
How do you determine what you put into your body? • Teens • Adults • Not driven by beneficial factors • Often driven by health benefits • Lower costs • Cost sometimes isn’t a determining factor (whole foods) • Taste is often sacrificed • Trends • Diets trends
WHY NUTRITION MATTERS • To make healthful food choices, you first must learn about nutrition • Nutrition: the process by which your body takes in and uses food • Your body relies on food to provide it with nutrients • Nutrients: substances in food that your body needs to grow, to repair itself, and to supply you with energy • 6 types of nutrients: fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and water. • The energy your body receives from food is measured in calorie. • Calorie- a unit of heat used to measure the energy your body uses and the energy it receives from food
Why does NUTRITION Matter Nutrition Energy Essential Nutrients - - Essential for body functioning - Food = Calories in - About 3 weeks without food - Energy Expended = Calories out - Fat - About 7 -10 days without water - - Carbs - Proper functioning based on what you eat If trying to lose weight, need to burn more calories than intaking - - Vital for organ functioning - Average daily allowance is 1, 6001, 800 calories intake for nonactive 2, 200 – 2, 400 for active Provides proper body functioning - Proteins - Vitamins - Minerals - Water
HUNGER AND APPETITE • One reason people eat is hunger • Hunger- the natural physical drive to eat, prompted by the body’s need for food • A second reason people eat is appetite • The psychological desire for food
FOOD AND EMOTIONS • Sometimes people eat in response to an emotional need, like when they feel stressed, frustrated, lonely, or sad. • In other cases, people may snack out of boredom or use food as a reward
FOOD AND EMOTIONS • Some people engages in “mindless eating, ” which is snacking continuously while absorbed in another activity • Recognizing how emotions affect your eating can help you break such patterns and reconnect your eating with real hunger • Examples: family and culture, friends, advertising, and time and money
