Chapter 10 Lesson 2 The Nation Grows

President Jefferson §In 1800, Thomas Jefferson was elected the nation’s third president. §Jefferson and the Democratic. Republican party wanted the states to be stronger than the federal government. They also wanted to help the farmers. §The Federalists disagreed, they wanted a stronger federal government and to help the merchants and manufacturers. §A manufacturer is someone who uses machines to make goods.

Louisiana Purchase § A large area of land west of the Mississippi River was under French control. § The biggest port in the Louisiana area was New Orleans and American farmers were worried that France would close this port to them. § President Jefferson sent representatives to France to get French ruler, Napoleon Bonaparte, to agree to let Americans use the port of New Orleans.

�France offered to sell Louisiana because they needed money for a war against Great Britain. �The land from the Louisiana Purchase cost 15 million dollars and doubled the size of the United States.

Lewis and Clark �President Jefferson was curious about the new land. �He sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on an expedition to find information about the new land. �He wanted Lewis and Clark to � 1)gather information about the landforms, plants, animals, and climates of the west � 2)study the cultures of the western Indians � 3)explore the Missouri and Columbia rivers to look for a route to the Pacific Ocean

Exploring the West �Lewis and Clark set out from St. Louis in May of 1804 with more than 30 people. �The people that traveled with Lewis and Clark are called the Corps (core) of Discovery. �A corps (core) is a team of people who work together. �The group included Americans, French. Canadians, an enslaved African-American named York, and a Shoshone woman named Sacagawea.

Sacagawea helped the expedition by: §Collecting plants for food and medicine §Being an interpreter (an interpreter is someone who helps speakers of different languages understand each other. §Trading with American Indians for horses and supplies

§The Corps (core) of Discovery traveled up the Missouri River, over the Rocky Mountains, and down the Columbus River to the Pacific Ocean. §They returned to St. Louis in 1806. §Lewis and Clark kept detailed journals about everything they saw. §Although a direct water route was not found, they did prove it was possible to cross the continent through the Rocky Mountains.

Zebulon Pike §In 1805, Zebulon Pike led 20 men up the Mississippi River to look for its source. §A source is the place where a river begins. §Pike and his men explored from St. Louis to northern Minnesota. §Although they never found the source, they did learn a lot about the land. §Later, Pike explored the Arkansas and Red Rivers. §He climbed a high peak which later became know as Pike’s Peak. §The journeys of Lewis & Clark and Pike were important because their expeditions led the way for pioneers and traders.
