What is History? § History is an account of past events of a group of people arranged chronologically. § Where do you get the information from? § Letters, documents (laws, diaries, newspapers, stories) written accounts
Primary/ Secondary § Eyewitness accounts- Things that we see. § Primary sources-Sources that are written by the very people who make the events of history happen. § Secondary sources-sometimes may not be accurate (forged), or may be the view of the writer.
Subjective/Objective § Subjective- Rely on our feelings instead of the facts. § Objective- To try very hard to use facts (trying to look at both sides)
Why is it that we read history? § § § So we know how we got here To compare what life was like in the past Knowing our ancestors will give us a sense of belonging. § Helps to learn from past mistakes § Learning about other people/places will help us understand our neighbors better.
How did we learn about the Hawaiians history… § It was through dance, stories, chants, legends. ( oral traditions) § Petroglyphs
History is like a science § § § There are geologists-study rocks, volcanoes Biologists-study plants and animals § Anthropologists-to help out in the study of the earth and its people (These groups studied the early Hawaiians)
