Chapter 1 The Nature of Science Student Objective
Chapter 1: The Nature of Science Student Objective Friday, December 17, 2021 Objective: SWBAT list and describe the steps of the scientific method. 1
Warm Up 12/17/2021 1. Earth Science is broken down into ____ specific areas. 2. _____ is the study of Earth, it’s make up, and the processes that form and change Earth. 3. _____ is the study of objects in space. astronomy biology five four geology meteorology oceanography three
The Scientific Method The scientific method is a series of problemsolving procedures used by scientists to reach a scientifically accurate conclusion. These steps do not have to be completed in a specific order. You may have to correct yourself at any one step and start over. 3
The Scientific Method 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Determine the problem Make a hypothesis Test your hypothesis Analyze the results Draw conclusions 4
The Scientific Method Observation is the process of obtaining information by using the senses. A hypothesis is a testable idea or explanation that leads to scientific investigation
Testing Your Hypothesis After a hypothesis is proposed, it is often tested by performing one or more experiments - a procedure that is carried out according to certain guidelines. Factors that can be changed in an experiment are called variables. http: //sirteddybertie. com/science-experiments-for-kids-at-home/ 6
Testing Your Hypothesis An experiment should test only one variable at a time. The control group is the group/material that experiences no change. It serves as a standard for comparison. http: //www. glencoe. com/sec/science/sc_inte ractions/si 4/skill_handbook/psp. shtml 7
Testing Your Hypothesis The independent variable in an experiment is the factor that is deliberately manipulated. http: //arose. iweb. bsu. edu/BSUCourses /ITEDU_699/LP/LP_4[variables]. htm The dependent variable is what changes as the result of the manipulation of one or more other factors. 8
Presenting and Analyzing Data 9
Theory vs. Law: When new data gathered over a long period of time supports a hypothesis, scientists become convinced that a hypothesis is a theory. A scientific theory is an explanation backed by results obtained from repeated tests or experiments. 10
Theory vs. Law: A scientific law is a general statement that describes how the natural world behaves in certain conditions, for which no exceptions have been found. 11
