3 Dimensions of Health Physical – get enough sleep and rest, eat nutritious meals, drink enough water, and be physically active on a regular basis. Mental/Emotional – SOCIAL PHYSICAL MENTAL/EMOTIONAL enjoy challenges, like to learn new things, stand up for their beliefs and values, in touch with their feelings and can express them, can deal with frustration, avoid dwelling on negative thoughts Social – able to make and keep friends, works and plays in cooperative ways, communicates well and shows respect and care for yourself and others.
Becoming Health Literate n Health Literacy refers to…a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote his or health and wellness. This class will help you become Health Literate!!
Lifestyle Factors that Influence Health n n n n n Getting 8 -10 hours of sleep each night Starting each day with a healthy breakfast Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day Being physically active for at least 30 mins. a day, 5 -7 days a week Maintaining a healthy weight Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs (ATOD) Abstaining from sexual activity before marriage Managing stress Maintaining positive relationships Practicing safe behaviors to prevent injuries
Prevention n The key to your wellness is PREVENTION! Prevention – practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury What’s an example of a prevention behavior? n Wearing a seat belt n Applying sunscreen n Avoiding unsafe areas
What is Abstinence? n Abstinence is… avoiding harmful behaviors, including the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs and sexual activity before marriage Choosing to abstain from high-risk behaviors is one of the most important health decisions you can make as a teen!
