Live via Satellite • Satellite broadcasting was introduced in 1962. • This made it possible to send and receive television signals anywhere in the world. • In 1969, satellite broadcasting allowed the world to watch live as television pictures were transmitted from the moon.
Broadcast Television The television signal travels through the air from one antenna to another antenna.
Commercial Broadcast Television A commercial broadcast television facility is one that is "for-profit" and sends its signal via a transmission tower through the air. The signal is free and anyone with an antenna may pick it up. The signal is radiated out in a pattern that crosses city, county, state, and national boundaries.
Federal Communications Commission (F. C. C. ) The Federal government agency that monitors and regulates all over the air transmitted signal such as radio, cell phones, and television signals.
Call Letters Four letters assigned to a licensed television or radio broadcaster by the F. C. C. to identify themselves on the air. They must identify themselves with these letters every hour. Miami
Call Letters The eastern United States uses call letters starting with a “W’, the western United States uses call letters starting with a “K”. The Mississippi river is the dividing landmark.
Ad A Television advertisement for a product or service. Also commonly called a spot. National Ad Local Ad
Early Days of Programming • For the first forty years of its existence, television was mostly “live. ” Programs were broadcast as they were being performed.

Television Network A corporation that bundles a collection of programs (sports, news, and entertainment) and makes the program bundles available exclusively to its affiliates. Generally, networks produce some of their own programing, but do not produce all of their own programs.
Affiliate A broadcast station that has aligned Itself with a particular network. The Network provides a certain number of hours of daily programming.
Affiliate Miami affiliates are: CBS Channel 4 NBC Channel 6 Fox Channel 7 ABC Channel 10
Television Programs A television program, or television show is a segment of content intended for broadcast on television. A commercial broadcast television station has three sources for obtaining television programs.
Local Origination Programming made in a specific geographic area, to be shown to the public in that same geographic area.
Network Programming National programs made available to affiliates for local broadcast. Usually morning, mid afternoon and evening.
Syndication The process of making a specified number of program episodes available for “lease” to individual broadcast stations after the current network’s contract for the program expires.

Subscriber Television Subscriber television is fee-for-service programming, where customers pay a monthly fee based on the selected programming package. The signal for subscriber television is transported by underground cable or satellite transmission.
Subscriber Television
Educational Television that aims to inform the public about various topics. This includes television programming that supports classroom studies and replays classroom sessions.
Industrial Television Sometimes called “corporate television”, communicates relevant information to a specific audience. For example, a company may use industrial television to train employees, training examples may include videos that teach workers how to operate machinery, or to train mechanics how to repair certain equipment.
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Television where the signal is sent through wires and serves only an extremely small, private predetermined area.
Surveillance Television A from of CCTV that is usually, but not always, used for security purposes. The cameras used in the system are always interconnected to a closed circuit television system.
Small Scale Production Company A production company with limited staff and equipment resources. Mostly produce commercials for local businesses, weddings, home inventory videos for insurance companies.
Large Scale Production Company Facilities with sufficient staff and equipment to produce multi-camera, large-budget programming shot on location or in studios for broadcast networks or cable networks.
Home Videotaped records of family events and activities taken by someone using a consumer camcorder or smart phone
