Chapter 1 flash cards Define observation and give
Chapter 1 flash cards
• Define observation and give an example of an observation you made today.
observation • a record or description of an occurrence or pattern in nature. Use it in a sentence. • I observed my cat eating a dead unicorn today. • video
Define hypothesis
Hypothesis • a reasonable and educated possible explanation based on what you know and what you observe • Use in a sentence
Define infer
infer • to draw a conclusion based on what you observe
Define controlled experiment
Controlled experiment • an experiment that involves changing one factor and observing its effect on another while keeping all other factors constant
Define variable
variable • a factor that can be changed in an experiment
VARIABLES Question: What are variables?
VARIABLES Answer: A variable is something that changes
NAME 4 TYPES OF VARIABLES
4 TYPES OF VARIABLE Independent Dependent Controlled Uncontrolled
DEFINE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE “MANIPULATED VARIABLE”
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE A variable that we change (manipulate) on purpose. Example-Change the type of medication.
DEPENDENT VARIABLE “RESPONDENT VARIABLE” A variable/result that changes. We do not know what this is when we begin the experiment Example- People stopped growing a third eyeball
DEFINE CONTROLLED VARIABLE “CONSTANT VARIABLE”
CONTROLLED VARIABLE “CONSTANT VARIABLE” A variable that does not change throughout the experiment. Example- temperature Food Sleep Etc…
Define UN-Controlled variable
UN-CONTROLLED VARIABLE A variable that changes that we have no control over. Example- genetics
Define constant
constant • variables that are not changed throughout an experiment
• Define chart
chart • an organizational tool that gives information about something in the form of a diagram, graph, or table
• What are the five steps to the scientific method in order?
Steps to the scientific method • • • 1. State the Problem 2. Make observations 3. Form a Hypothesis 4. Do the Experiment 5. Draw Conclusions
