Don’t confuse “easy to use” with “easy to learn” We need to understand the advantages and disadvantages of Internet Research Anyone can publish on the web. The internet’s reliability and quality of information is always in question. Much of the good stuff you find lacks either context or historical perspective. Have a research plan. This will help to save time. Perhaps start with a rough outline.
Continue ch. 10 Using the Library • Card catalog: author, subject, title • Books – look for the table of contents, find the major sections. • Periodicals, journals, magazines- online database • Almanacs- annual publications stores general statistics and facts • Atlases- maps, may give you geographical information on your speech. • Biographies- if your speech is on a well known individual • Encyclopedias- known as the most scholarly • Quotation collection- books of quotes are important to speeches. Plus this adds spice to your speech.
Using What You’ve Found • Remember to take notes when researching…rule of thumb is to take more notes than you will ever need so you don’t have to return to the library • Organize your notes so that you can incorporate them into your speech. • Plagiarism-is copying or imitating the language, ideas, or thoughts of another and passing them off as your original work. • If in doubt- NAME YOUR SOURCE! • Paraphrasing or rewording the original message is still taking someone else’s ideas.

Organizational Patterns 1. Chronological-puts things in a time sequence 2. Climactic- organizes your main headings in order of importance 3. Spatial- divides your topics on the basis of space relationship 4. Cause and effect- you are saying because of that, this happens. 5. Problem-solution- does exactly what it says, presents a problem and lists the solutions
