n n n The Second Bank of the United States (BUS) was founded in 1816, five years after the expiration of the First Bank of the United States. In 1822, Nicholas Biddle, a wealthy upper class intellectual and financier, was appointed president of the bank. The BUS was owned by individuals but the government used it to hold all its gold and silver. The bank's paper bills were accepted as equivalent to gold for any payments to the government. Jackson thought the BUS was a menace to the economy. He believed money should be in gold and silver coins and not paper.
