Wellbeing: What does it mean? • WHO defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and Social Well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. • In “the act” the wellbeing principle is defined as “I know and understand what care, support and opportunities are available to me and I get the help I need, which I need it, in the way I want it. ” 2

The five core principles of the Act are: • Voice and control – putting the individual and their needs, at the centre of their care, and giving them a voice in, and control over reaching the outcomes that help them achieve well-being • Prevention and early intervention – increasing preventative services within the community to minimise the escalation of critical need • Well-being – supporting people to achieve their own wellbeing and measuring the success of care and support • Co-production – encouraging individuals to become more involved in the design and delivery of services • Multi-agency working and co-operation 4

Conclusions: • SSWB is not simply a new set of laws • SSWB is a change in culture, from Deficit (what can’t you do) to Assets (what can you do) • Good advocacy practice has always been about the positive not the negative. Now we have to bring this change to everyone • It isn’t a simple change, that’s why its called culture change • By being able to articulate clients desires in terms of wellbeing then we are leading the way, and supporting citizens to fully engage in the process 7
