Who can take online classes with COA? Any student in the state of Arizona,

Who can take online classes with COA? Any student in the state of Arizona, between the ages of 12 and 22, can take classes with Chandler Online Academy. Students can enroll in one of our programs: 1. Full-time- Student takes all classes online with COA 2. Concurrent- Student takes part (1 -5 classes) of their full schedule of classes online with COA while taking the remainder of classes at a brick & mortar school 3. Part-time- Student pays for an online class from COA that they take in addition to their full schedule of classes at another school **Enrollment is continuous: Students can enroll any day between July – April 19 th ***COA Students take classes 100% from home and must have a computer with high speed internet access.

Why do students enroll in Chandler Online Academy? n Physical health impairment: i. e. migraines, surgery, ulcers n Extracurricular pursuits: i. e. gymnastics, golf, musical n Social challenges: i. e. social anxiety, negative peer influence/bullying, difficulty focusing when surrounded by peers n Living situation: i. e. moving in/out-of-district mid-semester, extended time out-of-state/country, traveling with family n Teen pregnancy/parenthood n They just want to: students do not have to have a reason to enroll in Chandler Online Academy. They can if they want to!

Who is a good candidate for online learning? n Students who have intrinsic motivation to learn and complete requirements for high school. n Students who are autonomous and will advocate for themselves (communicate through phone and email) to get help if they need it. n Students who learn well through primarily text and some image-based instructional methodologies. n Students who have support at home. n Students who are on-level in skills for their grade-level. n Students who need to spend more time on lessons/practice than is allowed when a teacher is providing instruction. n Students who can focus and work independently in their home environment.

Who is usually not a good candidate for online learning? n n n Students who are significantly deficient in basic reading, writing, and/or math skills. Students who need 1 -1 guidance and support. Students who are primarily auditory or kinesthetic learners. Students who are not motivated to learn or complete class work. Students who thrive on social interactions and are motivated by relationships with people.

These also help parents monitor student progress. Tailored and specific teacher feedback to submitted work Periodic interaction with teachers Students can review all lessons and assignments/tests at any time Parents can easily track student progress any time of day or night using the parent portal

Why should I refer my student who needs one or more online classes to COA? With COA… n Courses taught by CUSD teachers n Curriculum is aligned to standards and the level of rigor is sufficient to prepare students to be successful in the next class/level of study n Students have due dates each week and they are held accountable to complete their course within a reasonable time frame. n Our software is easy to navigate and very user-friendly n n Each Full-time and Concurrent student receives an orientation so that I can show them how to navigate the system, how to contact their teacher, and be sure they understand expectations. $160 includes teacher contact and support. Students who need it may schedule 1 -1 tutoring in-person, online, or by phone.

Find Chandler Online Academy. Click the “Counselor Information” page under the “What’s New” tab. Complete the quick and easy “Request a Mentor Account” form. Receive your log-in information within 1 business day. Return to the “Counselor Information” page any time you want to check your students’ progress and click “Mentor Account Log-in Page”

Part-time, Concurrent, Full-time Students: What’s the difference? Part-time Concurrent Full-time Enrollment Student obtains code from Counselor and enrolls online. Pays for course online at time of registration: $160 Student obtains approval from Counselor. May enroll in up to 6 total classes without cost. Student stays enrolled at B&M Students withdraw from their current school first, then complete the fulltime enrollment form online Orientation No, students receive an email with login information and policies Yes, the student and parent are required to participate in the virtual orientation before starting class Attendance Students are encouraged to work consistently but are not required to report attendance Yes, students must work a minimum of 5 hours a week per class and they must report attendance each week Yes, students must work a minimum of 25 hours a week and they must report attendance each week Course Length/ Schedule Students have 9 weeks to complete each. 5 credit class. Extensions can be purchased for $50 per week if needed. Students work through breaks Schedules are customized to best meet student needs. Usually students have until the end of the semester. Students may work through breaks Students take three 9 week. 5 credit classes at a time. Students have 9 weeks to complete all coursework and may work through breaks Progress Monitoring All assignments have due dates to help student finish by their end-date. Assignments turn red if late. Home school IEP team determines if/how student’s needs can be met in online courses before student can be approved for concurrent enrollment. COA will work with the student’s home school IEP support team to be sure student’s needs are met. Required IEP meeting with student and parent, Home school IEP Team, and COA Administration before enrollment is complete.
