Challenges …. • Segregation at source needs to reach 100%. . ü 60% of population residing in slum areas. ü Sorting of waste, is mostly accomplished by unorganized sector and seldom practiced by waste producers. • Out of 6900 TPD of MSW, 5500 TPD is being processed at Kanjur…… ü Starting projects in CRZ and high residential density areas. ü Overreliance on waste-to-energy plants goes against the spirit of decentralization. They are a pollution source and affect livelihood of ragpickers. • No debris processing facility……. ü C&D waste processing facility is proposed on land to be handed over by State Govt.
New Project Initiatives Ø MCGM intends to develop MSW processing and disposal facilities at Deonar. Ø Appointment of M/s TCE as a consultant and invitation of tender for Waste to Energy project of 600 MTPD at Deonar is done. Work is likely to be awarded shortly. Ø New tender for Waste to Energy project of additional 1200 MTPD capacity is under invitation. Ø State Government has alloted in principles additional land at Taloja (approx 60 Ha) and at Airoli, Navi Mumbai (approx 20 Ha) for setting up Waste processing and disposal projects.
