Small Groups of Instruments Small groups of instruments that play together are often referred to as “Chamber Ensembles” ◦ This is because in the past, musicians often had to perform in small rooms or “chambers” before there was ever bands or orchestras The type of Chamber Ensemble is based on three things: ◦ The number of players ◦ The prefix in the name ◦ The types of instruments used
Prefixes and Players The first part of the word that describes the root of a word Music often uses Italian prefixes Where else do you see these prefixes?
Solos and Accompaniment The word solo is Italian, meaning “alone” In music, solo is a piece or section that is played by one person A solo piece will often include an accompaniment to support the soloist ◦ The accompaniment can be as little as a piano to as big as an entire orchestra!
Instrumentation Chamber ensembles are also described by what instruments are used Homogenous groups have all the same or similar instruments ◦ Ex. Horn Quartet (4 horns), String Quartet (2 Violins, Viola, Cello) Heterogeneous instruments groups have all different ◦ Ex. Woodwind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, French horn, Bassoon)
Chamber Music Typically, Chamber Music comes in two parts: ◦ Individual Parts for each player ◦ Score form to see how all the parts line up
