Spatial characteristics • Language is different around the world • Helps create cultural regions – Example South America speaks Spanish • Brazil(largest South American country speaks Portuguese). This is a linguistic subculture – Language can equal history
Language Family Tree • 3, 000 -6, 500 languages are spoken globally – Estimate ½ of the 6, 500 that are out there will be lost • Dead languages (still spoken, but not changing) • Extinct Languages (not spoken)
• Languages are divided into families- share common origin • Language families are divided into branches • Branches may have a variety of dialects – It is a regional variety of a language – Ex: American English and British English
