Feudalism • Feudalism is: • 1) a political/economic system • 2) a mutual exchange of obligations between ruler and the ruled • 3) land for loyalty & military service (40 days)
Feudalism Terms • Fief---land given in exchange for loyalty • Vassal—one who receives land from lord in exchange for loyalty and service • Serf---peasant bound to a lord’s land • Feudal Contract—exchange of pledges between lord and vassal • Liege lord---owed first loyalty by a vassal • Manor---the castle, town, and land owned by a lord and worked by vassals and serfs • Knights---mounted warrior
