The Declaration of Independence states That people have the right to “Life, Liberty And the pursuit of happiness. ” What do these rights mean to you? How are they applied in our modern times?
Ch. 6. 1 – Tighter British Control Britain’s Problems 1. Prevent Native uprisings Costly to constantly fight on the frontier 2. Keeping peace in the American colonies 10, 000 troops to enforce the Proclamation Act Proved very expensive Britain’s Solutions Proclamation Act (1763): Maintain peace on the frontier Colonists’ Responses Angered those who wanted to settle there and land speculate Forbade colonists from settling beyond the Appalachian Mtns Quartering Act (1765): Required colonists to house all British soldiers Created great anxiety (nervousness) Fear that troops would be used to control the colonists

Paying for war debts: Sugar Act (1764): Massive debts required more revenue Tax on sugar, molasses, 1. Parliament had no right to tax other products shipped to 2. No tax without consent colonies Colonies to pay part of the cost of frontier defense & colonial govt Stamp Act (1765): All legal/commercial documents to show a stamp that tax is paid Anger focused on 2 issues: “No Taxation Without Representation” Virginia House of Burgess Member, Patrick Henry demands resistance “Stamp Act Congress” formed & wrote a petition to the King Sons of Libertyformed Boycotts forced British merchants to influence therepeal of the Samp Act
