Consciousness • awareness of oneself and one’s environment
Construct • concept used to talk about things we cannot see, touch or measure directly
Pre-consciousness • ideas that are not in your awareness right now, but you could recall if needed
unconsciousness • according to Freud, a reservoir of mostly unacceptable thoughts of which we are unaware but which influence our behavior
Non-consciousness • level on which our biological functions exist
Altered State of Consciousness • type of consciousness that is other than normal waking conditions

Unlike nightmares (which occur during REM sleep), a night terror is not technically a dream, but more like a sudden reaction of fear that happens during the transition from one sleep phase to another.

Addiction • continued repetition of a behavior despite adverse consequences
Depressant • An agent, especially a drug, that decreases the rate of vital physical activities
Intoxication • Bewilderment or excitement by the action of a chemical substance • Adjectives: drunkenness; inebriation
Narcotic • An addictive drug, such as opium, that reduces pain, alters mood and behavior, and usually induces sleep or stupor.
Stimulant • Psychoactive drugs which induce temporary improvements in either mental or physical functions or both. • "uppers"
Amphetamine • A stimulant • It stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain) by increasing the amount of certain chemicals in the body. • Has been used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity • Example: Methamphetamine
Hallucination • involves sensing things while awake that appear to be real, but instead have been created by the mind
Delusion • a belief held with strong conviction despite superior evidence to the contrary
Hallucinogen • Drug that causes people to see or sense things that are not real
Detoxification • the physical or medical removal of toxic substances from a human body
