§ Magellan's voyage shows that you can reach Asia by way of the Pacific. Other countries are going to look for easier ways to the pacific Competing Claims in North America § If possible a trade route from North America to Asia would be highly profitable § BUT could not find specific route so they settle for the next best thing and create colonies

§ The French want to find a trade route to the pacific so they set said and land in New York Harbor. § Another went farther North and landed near a giant mountian and named it Mont Real which later becomes Montreal Canada. § Later they will set sail in 1608 with 32 colonists and discover Quebec and will make this their new base of operations called “New France’

§ The french in 1683 will discover parts of Mississippi and will push South into a river valley and will name this valley Lousiania after King Louis 14 th. § By the 1700’s Frnace controlled most of the Midwest and Canada

§ English got angry because of explorations of Spaish and French so they decided to set sail themselves. The English Arrive in North America § In 1606 a company in England received a charter from King James to found a colony in North America. § They set sail and with 3 ships and 100 settlers they push into the harbor and create Jamestown. Named after the king.

§ This will become the English first permanent settlement in north America. § At first life wasn’t swell. § 7 out of 10 would die from starvation, disease, or war with Native Americans. § Discovered the great plant tobacco! § This will turn into a tremendious cash crop for England.

§ In 1620 a group known as Pilgrims founded a second english colony known as Plymouth. § Sought religious freedom from persecution over in England. § In 10 years they will morph into the Puritans. § Will reproduce rapidly and create New England

§ Will battle and kick out the Dutch land claim in the Americas near Manhattan Island § Then the English get greedy and push The Struggle for North America west into France’s land! § In 1754 dispute over land clains in Ohio river valley lead to war with France and England this will turn into the French and Indian War
