Ch. 26 How Ecosystems Change
Ecological Succession – the slow changes that occur in the environment. THERE ARE 2 KINDS OF SUCCESSION
Succession : 44 Animation of Suc. Ecological Succession – the slow changes that occur in the environment. THERE ARE 2 KINDS OF SUCCESSION 1. Primary Succession – A place that starts with no soil or life and succession begins. Pioneer Species – 1 st living things in an area.
2. Secondary Succession 1. Secondary Succession A place that has soil and used to have living things in its environment.
Climax Community When an ecosystem grows about as big as it will get. This is the end of succession.
Primary Succession • Doesn’t have soil • Change in ecosystem • Ends with climax community Secondary Succession • Has soil • Land was destroyed
Biomes
Biomes – Areas that share the same weather, plants, and animals.
Video: Tundra 7 Land Biomes 1. Tundra Ø a cold, dry, treeless region Ø No trees because of permafrost tundra Animals Sound of tundra
2. Taiga Ø A cold, forest region with evergreen trees Ø World’s largest biome Video: Taiga animals
3. Temperate Deciduous Forest Ø Have 4 seasons each year Ø We live here 1. Video 2. Forest Sounds fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff ff
4. Temperate Rain Forest Ø Mild temperatures with lots of rain 1. Video 2. Sounds of Forest
5. Tropical Rain Forest 1. Video 2. Sounds of rain forest Contains the most diverse species of plant and animals in the world.
6. Desert Ø Driest biome on Earth Video: Desert : 10 Desert Animals Desert sounds ØOnly plants and animals that can hold a lot of water in their bodies can live here.
7. Grassland Animals Sounds of grasslands Ø Rich soil used to grow crops Ø Few trees grow here because lack of water.

1. Freshwater 1. Video: Rivers and Streams 2. Video: Lakes and Ponds 3. Wetlands A. Rivers and Streams – Flowing water B. Lakes and Ponds – Forms when a low place in the land fills with rainwater or from a stream. C. Wetlands – Land that is wet all year long.
2. Saltwater Open Oceans Coral Reef picture Seashores Estuaries : 18 Open Ocean – 2 zones (1) Light Zone (2) Dark Zone Coral Reefs – Ocean ecosystems with huge amounts of life. Seashore – Where ocean meets land Estuary – Where river meets an ocean and contains a mixture of fresh and salt water
Freshwater • clean water Saltwater • lots of life • salty • amphibians • greater life • no salt • covers more area
