Ch 2: Conditional Statements Objective: To write and identify a conditional statement To be able to separate the hypothesis and conclusion of a conditional. College Geometry Singleton
Conditional Statement Definitions sentence that has the format of : Any If…. Then…. Ex: If it is raining then we have to take the shuttle bus to the south campus If x +3 =8 then x = 5 Counterexample Any statement that can be shown false by example Ex: If x² =16 then x = 4 x = -4 is a counter example because (-4)² = 16
Hypothesis and Conclusion Hypothesis – The condition that must be met. It is the part of the sentence that follows “If” Ex: If I do all of my homework then I can go to the movies Friday night Conclusion – The result of the condition being met. It is the part of the sentence that follows “then” Ex: If I have my cell phone out in class then Mr. Singleton will have Security take it away
Converse – to switch the hypothesis and conclusion of a conditional statement IF The weather is nice Then We will go outside IF You tell the truth Then You don’t have to remember anything
Contrapositive – to switch the hypothesis and conclusion of a conditional statement and make the statement negative IF IF The weather is nice You tell the truth not Then We will go outside not Then You don’t have to remember anything not
Inverse – the negative of a conditional statement IF The weather is nice not Then We will go outside not IF You tell the truth not Then You don’t have to remember anything not
Definitions and Classifications Postulate 5 Through any two points there exists one line Postulate 6 A line must contain at least two points If two lines intersect, the intersection is at one point Through any three noncollinear points there exists one plane Postulate 7 Postulate 8
