The Columbian Exchange
Colombian Exchange • The transfer of plants, animals, and disease from the Old World (Europe + Africa) to the New World (North and South America. • Turning Point in World History economically, socially, religiously.
Colonial Economies • Dominated by silver mines of Peru and Mexico and Sugar plantations of Brazil • Required Large Labor force. • Spanish used Encomienda (forced labor). • Peru: Mita system (forced labor for 6 months) • Portuguese develop slave labor for sugar plantations in Brazil and Atlantic Islands.
Social Classes of Spanish colonies. • Peninsulares - Men born in Spain who run the colonies. • Mestizo - Spanish and Native American mix. • Natives • Mulattos - European & African mix. • Slaves
Southern Colonies • Virginia company. Jamestown (complete failure) • Crown-appointed governors and representatives of towns (House of Burgessesdemocratic representation) • Carolinas- Fur Trade and slave labor plantations
Indentured Servitude • 80% of immigrants to Chesapeake Bay and Maryland colonies. • 4 -7 years of service in exchange for free passage to New World and land at the end of the service.
New England Colonies • Pilgrims and Puritans (Massachusetts Bay Company) • Fur, fish, commerce and shipping. • Boston (largest North American city)
“New France” Samuel de Champlain • Founded Quebec • Fur trade • Alliances with Huron and Algonquin tribes. • British will align with Iroquois. • Deforestation and decline of Beaver and deer population.
