Why use scientific names? • 1. Used worldwide – Written in latin (dead language) • 2. Avoid common name confusion • 3. Both are underlined for easy recognition.

• Phylogeny – evolutionary history of a species • Phylogenetic tree – diagram that shows the evolutionary relationship among organisms. • Dichotomous key – set of choices that leads to the name of the organism – Key out an organism according to its characteristics.
