Growth & Development • The change that occurs between childhood and adulthood is described as maturation • As you mature your physical, personal and behavioral characteristics become “more adult”
Types of Growth • Types of changes occurring as you grow and develop – chronological 1. physical 2. emotional 3. intellectual 4. social
Chronological Growth • Refers to a person’s age and occurs at the same rate for all people • Is often used for legal purposes – Brainstorm examples
Physical Growth • Refers to changes in body stature • It is influenced by heredity and health habits – Food eaten – Exercise – Care of the body
Intellectual growth • Means developing the ability to reason and form complex thought patterns
Intellectual Growth • Intellectual growth is influenced by heredity, environment, and the desire to learn • The processes involving thought and knowledge are called cognition
Social Growth • Means developing the ability to get along with other people
Think-Pair-Share • Who is more social-Babies or Teens? • Does social media promote social growth?
Emotional Growth • Refers to the development in the range of feelings and the ability to express these feelings • Social & emotional growth are closely intertwined
Emotional Growth • As these capabilities develop, children – learn self-control – gain confidence – develop self-esteem – develop new skills to cope with more complex social situations
Patterns of Growth & Development • Growth and development occur in sequential steps. • Example: child must be able to grasp a spoon before he can eat with it
Patterns of Growth & Development • Individual rates of growth mean that children grow and develop at different rates based on heredity, environment, motivation • Interrelated development rates are interactions among physical, emotional, social, and intellectual aspects of growth
