Ch 1 7 part 3 Two Step Objective
Ch 1. 7 (part 3) Two Step Objective: To solve two-step variable equations using both the Inverse Property of Addition & the Inverse Property of Multiplication
Definition Two Step Equation Two operations are performed: § Inverse Property of Addition § Inverse Property of Multiplication The operations are performed in REVERSE ORDER from the Order of Operations
Rules GOAL: Isolate the variable expression then Isolate the variable 1) Use Inverse Property of Addition. (Undo addition with subtraction. Undo subtraction with addition. ) 2) Use Inverse Property of Multiplication. (Hint: Multiply by the reciprocal for fractions) Perform both operations to both sides of the equation
Example 1 4 m + 2 = 10 -2 4 m 4 -2 = 8 4 m=2 Use Inverse Property of Addition Use Inverse Property of Multiplication
Example 2 (6) Use Inverse Property of Multiplication +1 -11 = x +1 Use Inverse Property of Addition
Example 3 Example 5 5 x + 2 = 37 -2 -2 5 x = 35 5 5 x=7 Example 4 -2 x - 7 = 3 +7 +7 -2 x = 10 -2 -2 x = -5 -3 -3 10 = x Example 6 -2 -2 -16 = x
Solve. 3) 1) -9 x + 1 = -80 -1 -1 -9 x = -81 -9 -9 x=9 2) 9 x - 7 = +7 9 x = 9 x=0 -7 +7 0 9 -8 -8 x = 12 4) +6 +6 x=4
Solve. 5) 5 x + 4 = 39 -4 -4 5 x = 35 5 5 x=7 7) 7 - x = 12 -7 -7 -x=5 (-1) (- x) = 5 (-1) x = -5 6) 8) -6 +4 +4 (3) x = 18 -6 (-5) -35 = x (-5)
Solve. 11) 9) -10 -9 -10 x = -24 10) -9 x = -18 12) +4 +4 x = 18 -5 32 = x -5
