James Oglethorpe started the Georgia colony to try to give a fresh start to what groups of people? Debtors- person or country that owes money Poor People The King also believed Georgia would act as a “buffer” colony. It would help defend the rest of the colonies from Spanish attack. The Spanish controlled present-day Florida at the time!

Fun Fact! Local Government in the colonies: Over time, townspeople began discussing local issues at town meetings. These developed local governments, with landowners holding the right to vote and pass laws. Because colonists in many areas took part in local government, they developed a strong belief in their right to govern themselves. Town meetings helped set the stage for the American Revolution.

Test Review Family Roles! Men were the formal heads of the household. They managed the farm or business and represented the family in the community. Sons might work as apprentices or indentured servants. Women ran the households and cared for children. Many worked in the fields with their husbands. They had few rights. Women were also important because their arrival led to large population growth in the colonies. Colonists started large families which helped the colonies grow and prosper. Children as young as 4 or 5 might also work.

Colonial Education Most colonists valued education. Parents often taught their children to read and write at home. In New England, many people sent their children to school to learn how to read and study the Bible. This meant that many people in New England were literate (Could read and speak well). Especially in comparison to the Southern colonies.

The Great Awakening In the 1730 s and 1740 s, a religious revival called the Great Awakening swept through the colonies. In New England the Middle Colonies, ministers called for “a new birth, ” a return to the strong faith of earlier days. It inspired greater religious freedom. It led to a focus or emphasis on personal faith rather than church rituals.

Focus on Colonial Life and Massachusetts Bay. These two topics are very broad. There could be questions about a large variety of topics. But the topics of these two ideas include many of the people, places, and ideas we have talked about.
