Research question: How might we improve engagement with our students in a fun way? ?

Goals: • to motivate, to engage, and to provide my students with a real world application of the mathematics Core Academic Standards. • to have the students actively learning through kinesthetic-tactile experiences by designing and building, testing and programming robots using the LEGO EV 3 Mindstorms technology.

The Challenge: The challenge for FLL (First Lego League) this year was “Animal Allies”, where students researched how animals and humans interact. The students learned about critical thinking, team building and presentation skills, along with opportunities to reflect on activities and contemplate decisions made with an awareness of core content and of the process of learning to explore new solutions for the challenge at hand.

Costs: $939. 80 Grant Monies • 2 EV 3 Expansion Robot Kits ($239. 90) but only spent $197. 30 • 2016 FLL Challenge Field Kit ($87. 98 including shipping and handling ) • Membership Fees to FLL ($225) for a team of 10 students • 2 Dash and Dot Robots ($399. 90)

Unknown Other Costs Not covered by grant • Local Competition Registration $50. 00 • Practice Table Materials $50. 00 • Construction of Table Free volunteer

Suggestions for those interested in sponsoring a FLL team: • When registering your team, have an experienced coach guide you through the process. It can be a nightmare!!!! • Order field kits as soon as possible! It will take time to assemble the items!
