CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT St. Luke’s University Hospital Southside Medical Center
WHO WE ARE v. Located in Bethlehem, PA v v. Part Team: C clinic • Medical Assistant • RN, program coord • Nurse Practitioner • ID doctor
OUR POPULATION Approximately 173 clients • 41 new clients in 2012 • 51% male, 49% female • 45% Hispanic • 64% living at or below FPL
PROJECT • We chose this project because less than 25% of our female patients had received their yearly cervical cancer screening (PAP) in early summer 2012. • Goal: reach 50% completion rate by summer 2013.
METHODS AND TESTS v. To kick off our improvement effort we dedicated a week to women’s health v. The first “Women’s Health Blitz Week” took place from September 17 th-22 nd 2012 v. This week was designed to be a “one stop shop” for our female patients to have all of their yearly screenings addressed in one visit v. Each client received a goodie bag with condoms, pamphlets, and toiletries
METHODS AND TESTS
THE RESULTS • 50% of scheduled women showed up during the blitz week • The remaining 50% were either no shows or called and canceled • 10 women were connected to care to have mammograms, 2 to colonoscopy, and 1 to DEXA • Blitz week repeated in March 2013
LESSONS LEARNED v Improvements made for March Blitz Week • Reduced Blitz Week from 5 days to 3 days • Accommodated clients’ availability better when scheduling appointments • Utilized case managers to make reminder calls
