CERN Students Summer School 2008 Welcome to the 2008 Summer Students: You are ~216 students from 52 different countries ! • • • July 2 th 2008 Summer Students Team Ingrid Schmid Catherine Nederman James Purvis Virginie Blondeau (Student) Andreas Schopper Dirk Duellmann Werner Herr Christophe Grojean James Wells Fabio Cerutti (Chairman) Fabio Cerutti

CERN : World’s largest Particle Physics lab • Founded in 1954 to consolidate and develop the European science • Today CERN includes 20 permanent countries-members and as observers: Japan, Russian Federation, USA, India, Turkey, Israel, EU and UNESCO • About 8000 User Physicists working for some time here (1/2 of HEP community) July 2 th 2008 Fabio Cerutti

The advantages of working at CERN Put in common facilities, tools and resources: Possibility to realize very challenging experiments at the frontier of science Profit from the large community of theorists, experimentalists, accelerator, computing experts Work in a scientific environment dedicated to fundamental science Example of an international organization where people from all over the word work well together with the same objectives July 2 th 2008 Fabio Cerutti

Science highlights at CERN • Discovery of Neutral Currents 1972 • Discovery of W and Z bosons (SPS) 1983 • Search and measurement of the Direct component of CP Violation (1988 -2001) • Measurement of the number of light neutrino families (LEP) 1991 • Precision test of SM theory and constraints on the Higgs boson mass (LEP) 1991 -2000 • Evidence for the quark-gluon plasma (Heavy Ions) • Creation of anti-Hydrogen in the Lab (2002) July 2 th 2008 Fabio Cerutti

Being @ CERN in Summer 2008: Very exciting period !!!! LHC Accelerator and detectors getting into operation: first beam injections Summer 2008 ! July 2 th 2008 Fabio Cerutti

The CERN Students Summer School Old tradition: Fist school held in 1969 It is meant give you a first flavor of the world of research on HEP Through Series of lectures on theoretical and experimental physics Individual work within a CERN group July 2 th 2008 Key point: • Get involved in HEP research and the fundamental questions related to it and in addition • Discuss directly with the people working at CERN to understand their motivations and way of thinking and of working Fabio Cerutti

Lectures: Topics and professors • Topics : Relevant subjects in High Energy Physics at CERN and around the world • The lecturers are chosen among the main actors of each field also on the basis of their pedagogical skills • In order to accommodate with the heterogeneous students composition: several courses start with ‘basic introduction’ followed by more ‘Advanced’ lectures July 2 th 2008 Fabio Cerutti

And a Welcome drink today ~16: 30 The Summer Student Program is considered a crucial activity by CERN: your feedback is important to constantly improve the quality/content of the lectures ! July 2 th 2008 Fabio Cerutti

Suggestions for your summer at CERN Meet your colleagues Profit from lectures, seminars, workshops and discussions Enjoy the region ASK QUESTIONS and be INTERACTIVE: right place to ask question is the discussion session Get involved into “real” experimental work for admin.
