CEP I 1 March 31, 2014 Youngsoo and Jasmine

Homework Peer Review (1) • Before swapping your homework, do you remember what makes a paragraph a well written one? • Make sure your paragraphs are indented • Make sure you have a clear and narrow topic and a topic sentence for your essay. • Make sure your other sentences are related to your topic sentence. • Check for spelling, grammar, and punctuations! • Try to use comparatives and superlatives (e. g. , “__ is bigger than __”, “__ is not as rich as __”).

Homework Peer Review (2) • Do the following for peer review: • Circle all spelling and grammatical errors. • If you can find the topic sentence, underline it. • If there’s something wrong with the organization of the paragraph, make a note of it. • Write your name and give your comments (2 -4 sentences) such as compliments and how your partner can improve his/her writing.

Homework Peer Review (3) • Once finished, return the homework to your partner and start a discussion: • Tell each other what you thought about the homework. • Show your partner where and why you circled the errors. Try to figure out how you can fix it (or may it doesn’t need to be fixed). • Discuss ways to improve your writing skills.

Homework Peer Review (4) • What were some of the common mistakes in the homework (brainstorm on board). • What are some good ways to improve your writing?

In-class Writing Activity (1) • Now that you know how to write a better paragraph and which mistakes to avoid, let’s try an in-class writing activity! • Write 4 -6 sentences about your hobby. You have 10 minutes. • Use your notes to help you write better!

In-class Writing Activity (2) • Now, review your own writing just like how you reviewed your partner’s homework. Do the same thing you did for your paper: • Circle all spelling and grammatical errors. • If you can find the topic sentence, underline it. • If there’s something wrong with the organization of the paragraph, make a note of it. • Write your name and give your comments (2 -4 sentences) such as compliments and how your partner can improve his/her writing.

In-class Writing Activity (3) • Did you find any mistakes? Were they the same mistakes or new type of mistakes? • What was different about reviewing your own paper versus your partner’s paper? • What did you learn through from doing this?

In-class Writing Activity (4) • What is the purpose of this? • You will become better writers by becoming more aware of your own mistakes and improving your organization (narrowing of topics and topic sentences). • Once you develop a habit of proofreading your own work or asking a friend for a review, you will produce much better essays!
