CNES Climate Change Working Group Final report • Last year in Frascati, I presented the work of this CNES WG. I just recall here its objectives: - to analyze the CNES contribution to the studies on climate change, - to put this contribution in the international context, - to make recommendations in order to enhance the efficiency and the visibility of this contribution. • The WG final report, endorsed by the CNES management last year, has been finalized and edited recently (in French). • Translation in English will be done soon and the English version shall be distributed to the CEOS WG on Climate. CEOS WG Climate, Asheville, USA, 17 -18 April 2012 2

CNES Climate Change Working Group Final report Now I just recall two of the CNES WG recommendations, dealing with climate data series. A. To start a study, involving CNES scientific advisory groups, on the scientific and programmatic added-value of reprocessing CNES climate data (long series) in order to get climate quality FCDR and ECV. (This study must take into account already existing European and world programmes such as ESA CCI, SCOPE-CM…) B. To propose with CEOS (via its Climate WG) and with CNES scientific advisory groups a few inter-agency climate reprocessing activities on which French expertise and data could be a relevant contribution. CNES Climate Change Working Group Final report I must admit that progress on these actions has been very slow up to now. Nevertheless, a «task force» has been set up with CNES programme managers and French scientists to implement action A. This task force will begin to meet end-April. Its first goal will be to draw up an inventory (what, where, how long, maturity, partners…) of existing climate data series derived from CNES missions. Other related CNES activities Climate-related data centers (Thematic data centers) CNES is partner of several French Thematic data centers which process, archive and distribute Earth observation satellite data. These centers are (or will be) involved in processing/reprocessing activities for climate date records. 1. ICARE center (partnership with other French institutions) is dedicated to aerosols-cloud-water vapor-precipitation data. Main space missions involved: Parasol, Calipso (mirror site of NASA/ASDC), Modis, MSG, TRMM, Megha-Tropiques. http: //www. icare. univ-lille 1. fr/ 2. ETHER center (partnership with CNRS) is devoted to the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Main space missions involved: Odin/SMR, IASI (in connexion with Eumetsat), GOSAT. http: //ether. ipsl. jussieu. fr/ 3. AVISO center (partnership with CLS, also NASA, NOAA, Eumetsat) is devoted to oceanography, mainly ocean surface altimetry. Main space missions involved: ERS-1, ERS-2, Topex-Poseidon, Envisat, Jason-1, Jason-2. http: //www. aviso. oceanobs. com/ 4. PNSC center (partnership with other French institutions) is under construction. It will be devoted to land data, at global and regional scales. Main space missions involved: Spot/Vegetation, Envisat/Meris, Modis, MSG. CEOS WG Climate, Asheville, USA, 17 -18 April 2012 5

Other related CNES activities Involvement in European Climate activities Ø CNES and the French

Other related CNES activities Involvement in European Climate activities Ø CNES and the French scientific community are involved in the programme CCI of ESA Ø CNES has one participant in the CMUG group, which insures the link between CCI and the modelling community. Ø CNES supports French scientists involved in several consortia of CCI: sea-level, aerosol, cloud, greenhouse gases, fires, land cover, ocean colour, ozone, SST, CMUG. Ø French scientists supported by CNES are taking part in Eumetsat climate activities For example, algorithms and expertise of LATMOS on IASI level 2 products (O 3, CO. . ) will be part of SAF ozone. Ø Via the Thematic data centers, CNES is involved in the consortia which will lead to GMES Core Services: Services MACC-2 (atmosphere), My. Ocean (ocean) and Geoland-2 (land). These Core Services will have a role in the building of some ECV climate products. CEOS WG Climate, Asheville, USA, 17 -18 April 2012 6

Other related CNES activities Next Climate-related space missions 1. Megha-Tropiques (CNES-ISRO), launched on 12 October 2011, will study the water and energy cycles in the tropical atmosphere. The performances of the instruments Saphir, Scarab and GPS-ROS are satisfactory. Regarding Madras, there has been an anomaly currently under investigation. The opening of level 1 data to the scientists has been delayed, but it is planned to begin end-April (excluding Madras data). The tropical cyclone Thane as seen by Saphir on 29 December 2011. Other related CNES activities Next Climate-related space missions 2. Saral (CNES-ISRO) will embark the Ka-band radar altimeter Alti. Ka, dedicated to accurate measurement of ocean surface topography, as the successor of the RA-2 instrument onboard Envisat. Planned launch date: October 2012. 3. Jason-3 (Eumetsat, NOAA, CNES, NASA) will be the follow-on of Jason-2, intended to provide operational continuity for the collection and distribution of high-precision data for the monitoring of sea-level. Planned launch date: 2014. CEOS WG Climate, Asheville, USA, 17 -18 April 2012 8

Other related CNES activities Next Climate-related space missions 4. IASI-NG (CNES-Eumetsat) is a new infrared sounder intended to fly on the Eumetsat EPS-SG programme of polar-orbiting meteorological satellites (2020 -2040). It will succeed to IASI on Metop, with improved performances. CNES phase A is just ending and the final decision of CNES to develop IASI-NG with Eumetsat shall be taken end-April. 5. Merlin (CNES-DLR) is a cooperative small satellite mission for the measurement of atmospheric methane (CH 4). DLR will provide the instrument, an integrated-path differential absorption lidar. CNES will contribute by its new small platform Myriade-E and will operate the mission. The Merlin phase A will end mid-2012. Planned launch date: 2016. Other related CNES activities Next Climate-related space missions 6. Microcarb (CNES) is project for measuring CO 2 column concentrations using a compact and cheap instrument, in order to quantify CO 2 surface fluxes at regional scales and to identify and monitor global carbon sources and sinks. The concentrations will be deduced from the absorption by CO 2 of reflected sunlight in the near-infrared with a dispersive grating spectrometer. These measurements will constrain natural CO 2 fluxes at the Earth surface through data assimilation in models. CNES phase A is ongoing. CEOS WG Climate, Asheville, USA, 17 -18 April 2012 10
