Background of the CDC • Founded in 1946 to fight the disease malaria • Located in Atlanta, Georgia • Composed of 13 major component organizations • Included as part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
Mission of the CDC seeks to accomplish its mission by working with partners throughout the nation and the world in order to: • • monitor health detect and investigate health problems conduct research to enhance prevention develop and advocate sound public health policies implement prevention strategies promote healthy behaviors foster safe and healthful environments provide leadership and training
Major Facilities of the CDC Motto: • – – Designed for Health Built for Science Prepared for Tomorrow Global Communications Center Features high-tech, cutting-edge meeting spaces for training public health professionals. Houses a visitor education center, a multimedia facility that offers the public an opportunity to study and learn about public health. Question: 1. Why do you think that it is important for the CDC to be able to communicate effectively with other countries around the world?
Facilities of the CDC continued… • Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory – Triples the CDC’s capacity to research pathogens that require the highest levels of safety precautions, such as Ebola, viral hemorrhagic fevers, monkeypox, and avian influenza. Question: 1. Which one of these diseases has been studied in your science class this semester? – Enables world-class scientists at the CDC to extend the boundaries of scientific knowledge and meet the challenges posed by the health threats of the 21 st century. – Includes the Special Pathogens Branch.

Facilities of the CDC continued… • Environmental Health Laboratory – Allows CDC scientists to use advanced laboratory science and innovative techniques to prevent diseases resulting from toxic chemical exposures in the environment. – Enables CDC scientists the capacity to respond to terrorism and public health emergencies involving chemicals and to improve laboratory methods to diagnose and prevent diseases. Question: 1. What potentially dangerous chemicals or materials were used in your science laboratory exercise this semester?

Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) • USAMRIID – Military research center located in Fort Detrick, Maryland, which is very similar to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). • Mission – To conduct basic and applied research on biological threats resulting in medical solutions to protect the warfighter (military personnel). • Tour – http: //www. usamriid. army. mil/
