Center for High Performance Learning Environments High Performance School Case Study: Mel and Zora Rashkis Elementary School at Meadowmont Chapel Hill, North Carolina Color coded hallways and different height of drinking fountains are only two of the items which show this buildings attention to details. Porticos between the classrooms and the play area/ courtyard also provide shading for the classroom windows. Light wells centrally placed in classrooms provide optimum levels of day lighting. Special louvers are placed to filter this light. Open classroom designs are critical for orientations for learning environments. Light wells are placed intermittently, extending from the perimeter to the central stem of the building. There is an interstitial space provided above for use of centrally controlled heating, cooling, and air handling systems.
