Cell Wall Strong, stiff nonliving layer outside the cell membrane; in plants, made of cellulose Helps protect and support cell Only in plant cells
Plant Cell
Cell Membrane In plant cells: located just inside cell wall. In other cells: forms outside boundary that separates cell from its environment. Controls what substances come in or out of the cell. In both plant and animal cells.
Cytoplasm Region Between the nucleus and the cell membrane; consists of jelly like substance that contains many organelles. Produces energy, build and transport needed materials, and store and recycle wastes. In both animal and plant cells
Nucleus A large, oval structure. Cell’s control center, directing all of the cell’s activities. In both animal and plant cells.
Nucleolus Inside the nucleus Makes ribosomes Found in both plant and animal cells.
Chromatin One of a set of structures found in the nucleus Made of DNA and some protein Contains genetic material, the instructions that directs the function of the cell Found in both plant and animal cells.
Ribosomes Small, grain like body made primarily of RNA May be attached to endoplasmic reticulum or floating free in the cytoplasm. Produced in nucleolus. Place where proteins are made Found in both plant and animal cells.
Ribosomes
Endoplasmic Reticulum Looks like maze of passageways. Carries protein and other materials from one part of the cell to another. Found in both plant and animal cells.
Mitochondria Rod-shaped organelle. Located in the cytoplasm. Has a smooth outer membrane and a greatly folded inner membrane. Produces energy for the cell. Found in both plant and animal cells.
Vacuole Large, water-filled sac floating in the cytoplasm Plant cells have one large one. Animals have several small ones. Stores food, water, wastes, and other materials Found in both plant and animal cells.
Vacuole
Lysosome Small, round structures that contain chemicals can break down food. Breaks down large food particles into smaller ones. Breaks down old cell parts and release the substances Found in both plant and animal cells, however, they are rare in plant cells.
Chloroplasts Large, green structures. Captures energy in sunlight and uses it to produce food. Found in only plant cells.
Golgi Bodies Flattened collection of sacs and tubes. Receives, packages, and distributes proteins Found in both plant and animals.
