Cells and Life CHAPTER 2 LESSON 1 Vocabulary
Cells and Life CHAPTER 2; LESSON 1
Vocabulary foldable instructions: Take 1 piece of paper Fold it in half hot dog style On the front, make nine cuts (this will give you ten flaps). Write “Vocabulary-Lesson 1” on the top flap. Write the following vocabulary words (on next slide) on the rest of the flaps.
Vocabulary Cell Theory Robert Hooke Matthias Schleiden Theodore Schwann
vocabulary Macromolecules Nucleic acids Proteins Lipids carbohydrates
Vocabulary Cell Theory- states that all living things are made of one or more cells, and all new life comes from pre-existing cells. Macromolecules- formed by molecules joining together. Nucleic acids-long chains of molecules called nucleotides joined together that form your genetic make-up. Proteins- long chains of amino acid molecules; they are necessary for what cells do.
Vocabulary Cont. Lipid- a macromolecule that does not dissolve in water. Carbohydrates- sugar molecules. Robert Hooke- saw the first cell under a microscope and said that cell is made of little “room-like” structures. Matthias Schleiden-botanist- German scientist that used the new microscopes to look at plant cells. Theodore Schwann- used the microscope to study animal cells.
What’s in a cell? Lab How did we observe what’s in a cell?
Microscopes
3 Scientists you need to know: Robert Hooke- saw the first cell under a microscope and said that cell is made of little “room-like” structures.
3 Scientists you need to know: Matthias Schleiden-botanist- German scientist that used the new microscopes to look at plant cells.
3 Scientists you need to know: Theodore Schwann- used the microscope to study animal cells. The two realized that a plant and animal cell looked very similar. https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=4 Op. Bylw. H 9 DU
The Cell Theory: 3 principles
What are cells made of? Water makes up more than 70% of a cells volume. Water fills and surrounds the cells helping the body to maintain homeostasis. So…Why do you need water? Water is essential for all living things on the earth.
It’s time for: Recent science events Why do some scientists think that Mars and some of the moons of the solar system may contain some form of life?
More of what cells are made of… Like a train: Cells are made of little parts that are joined together, these substances are called macromolecules. Macromolecules have extremely important roles in cells, but macro molecules cannot function without the main ingredient: Water!!!!
Macromolecules: These are the basic substances that make up a cell: 1. Nucleic acids: This is your DNA (sentence example) 2. Proteins: Have jobs in a cell like communicating or transport. 3. Lipids: form a protective barrier in cells. 4. Carbohydrates: store energy for a cell, provide support, and communicate. Lab or activity
